What is your work and how did you end up focusing on the work you do?

I’m a transportation consultant at TransPro Consulting, Chair of the nonprofit Kansas City Regional Transit Alliance, and an active board member for the KC Streetcar (both the Authority and the special district). I transitioned into the transportation world because I saw the utility of public transportation and became quickly frustrated with how lopsided our local transportation network is — the result of actual planning work done by transportation professionals and elected officials.

What’s your biggest motivation to do climate work (or for engaging in climate action)?

I love being outside and traveling. I don’t see these two passions being as enjoyable with more extreme weather that will result from climate change.

If you could accomplish one big goal related to climate action, what would it be?

Regional funding for public transportation approved by voters in every MARC county.

Who inspires you the most?

Advocates.

What’s one book that helped inform your perspective on climate action/the climate crisis?

I’m more of a news junkie, so there isn’t one book but the increasing drum beat of scientists sounding the alarm that were barreling past the tipping point. I guess you could say it’s the IPCC report then.

What words of wisdom or motivation can you share with those who want to engage in climate action?

Keep pushing leaders and do your best to mitigate your own impacts to the environment.

What’s one thing you do to recharge from your work?

Listen to music.

What is your work and how did you end up focusing on the work you do?

I am the manager for the Environmental Commitment Department (i.e. Sustainability Department) for the natural gas distribution company, Spire. I have worked in the environmental field for 17 years; 12 years with an environmental consulting firm and 5 years with Spire. I have a Bachelors of Science in Biology and a Masters of Science in Environmental Science. The environment and nature have been a huge part of my life since I was a little girl, and I knew from the beginning that I would end up working in a field that helped care for the environment.

What’s your biggest motivation to do climate work (or for engaging in climate action)?

Taking care of our planet is an integral part of healthy living, for everyone. If we can do better, why not? And if we can work together for a common good, even better.

If you could accomplish one big goal related to climate action, what would it be?

Educating others

Who inspires you the most?

RBG and John Lewis

What’s one book that helped inform your perspective on climate action/the climate crisis?

Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. It is such an enthralling tale that shows the importance of considering all aspects of caring for the environment. The climate crisis is an important piece, but there is so much more that needs to be considered and addressed as well, and all need to be taken into consideration when decisions are made.

What words of wisdom or motivation can you share with those who want to engage in climate action?

Don’t hesitate to be involved. All perspectives are needed. Become educated and willing to work together.

What’s one thing you do to recharge from your work?

Travel is important to me, and I try to spend as much time outdoors as possible when I do. Whether it’s hiking or spending time on the beach, the outdoors and especially time around water is essential for me!
